Pumpkin & Marrow Weigh-in: Rupert Mayhew

A massive well done to George Mayhew who came up with a brilliant initiative to promote vegetable growing in and around the village.

He came up with the idea for a weigh-in for large pumpkins and marrows, and the inaugural ‘Pumpkin and Marrow’ weigh-in took place at the village playing fields on Saturday October 26th.

There were several pumpkin submissions and there was a small prize for the largest/heaviest Cucurbita (marrow or pumpkin), which was won by Tiggy Thornton with a 90lb back-breaking beast.

The photos show George presenting the trophy to Tiggy, and some of the other submissions.

There are plans afoot to encourage more pumpkin and marrow growing - next year the Mayhew team plan to grow seedlings from Tiggy's pumpkin and distribute them to people, in the village and beyond, who want to take part in this wonderful weigh-in event. Hopefully it might encourage some vegetable growing, and this event is not limited to these seedlings, you can bring any pumpkin or marrow that you have grown along to this event.

We will update you with the next chapter in the spring when the new pumpkin seedlings are ready for willing competitors! Watch this space for more information.
